Doughnuts Are For Closers

12 August
John

Editor and author John Edward Lawson here with a half dozen doughnuts, an hour of time, and a laptop. Have a seat with me and share my doughnuts while we write, draw, and generally make things.

Wait…you're too far away? You have someplace to be later? No school or camp, so you have to stay with your children? There's extreme weather, and a pandemic on?

No worries! I have you covered.

Introducing Writing Jams

Here at the Broadkill Writers Resort, we understand life has dealt us imperfect circumstances to continue creative pursuits. That's why we built a place where we can meet up online just like so many of us used to.

They have been called writing dates, co-working sessions, and writing sprints. We call them writing jams, and for the foreseeable future all the writing jams we host will be virtual.

Our virtual space is peer-to-peer encrypted, meaning nobody—including the company behind the tech—can access your information, the audio of our meeting, the video or anything on screen…nothing. This has been a huge problem on other platforms.

We had an impromptu test session yesterday that began a little rocky, but finished strong! Unfortunately, one participant was bumped out of the writing jam, but the remainder of us were able to post great results.

One writer completed almost 800 words on a brand-new story, one writer completed an article for submission, and even with running the session guiding people in from our social media channels, I managed to write 500 words myself!

We'll be hosting three more of these free 1-hour writing jams. Here's the schedule:

  1. Thursday 8/12 (today) at 3 p.m. EST
  2. Friday 8/13 at 3 p.m. EST
  3. Saturday 8/14 at 8 p.m. EST

The address where you can participate ishttps://sprints.broadkillresort.com/writing-jam

Find us on social media and send a direct message to acquire the password. These free trial sessions are first come, first served, with room for about 10 of us in the room. If in doubt, reach out and ask! We hope to hang out with you there.

In the meantime, if you'd still like a doughnut, well, you can have one, but you have to do the work. Show up, write, revise, sketch, make your beats, color correct photos, do whatever it is you do. Just remember these iconic words from Glengarry Glen Ross:

Doughnuts are for closers!

(Okay, that might not be the exact quote, but you get the gist.)
